AI image generators are an exciting new tool that can be used by anyone with a creative eye and an appetite for experimentation. But before you dive in head first and start playing around with the tools, it’s important to understand what they can do and how they work.
This guide will provide all the information you need to get the most out of your AI image generator!
Let’s get practical, in this article, we will cover Midjourney AI Image Generator.
What Exactly is an AI Image Generator?
In a few words, an AI image generator is a tool that creates stunning artwork via user input. The user input is called “the prompt”, it is a description of what the image should look like.
As you can see, the prompt is a crucial part as it will define the outcome. The prompt itself is made of the user input (text description) and some predefined commands.
How To Achieve Stunning Results With Midjourney?
It might look difficult at first but Midjourney is an open community project. This means that it is showing us the works of others and their prompt in achieving the result. This is a huge thing as we can learn visually from tons of other results.
Let’s see the following example generated with MidJourney:
I have always loved movies where other planets were seen in the sky. It amazed me how beautiful the sky would be. So I thought to ask Midjourney to create an image for me.
The above image was generated with a very simple prompt: Other planets visible in the sky. With such a super simple prompt we got a stunning image in a matter of seconds. More results can be achieved with more complex prompts.
Now, let’s check a really complex prompt from a user on MidJourney.
stunning beautiful black haired female with long layered highlighted hair and bright blue shining eyes, Ravishing, wearing high heels, attractive, elegant, exquisite, sumptuous, wide shot, daylight, Unreal Engine, Cinematic, Color Grading, portrait Photography, Shot on 22mm lens, Ultra-Wide Angle, Depth of Field, hyper-detailed, beautifully color-coded, insane details, intricate details, beautifully color graded, Unreal Engine, Cinematic, Color Grading, Editorial Photography, Photography, Photoshoot, Shot on 22mm lens, Depth of Field, DOF, Tilt Blur, Shutter Speed 1/1000, F/22, White Balance, 32k, Super-Resolution, Megapixel, ProPhoto RGB, VR, Lonely, Good, Massive, Halfrear Lighting, Backlight, Natural Lighting, Incandescent, Optical Fiber, Moody Lighting, Cinematic Lighting, Studio Lighting, Soft Lighting, Volumetric, Contre-Jour, Beautiful Lighting, Accent Lighting, Global Illumination, Screen Space Global Illumination, Ray Tracing Global Illumination, Optics, Scattering, Glowing, Shadows, Rough, Shimmering, Ray Tracing Reflections, Lumen Reflections, Screen Space Reflections, Diffraction Grading, Chromatic Aberration, GB Displacement, Scan Lines, Ray Traced, Ray Tracing Ambient Occlusion, Anti-Aliasing, FKAA, TXAA, RTX, SSAO, Shaders, OpenGL-Shaders, GLSL-Shaders, Post Processing, Post-Production, Cel Shading, Tone Mapping, CGI, VFX, SFX, insanely detailed and intricate, hypermaximalist, elegant, hyper realistic, super detailed, dynamic pose, photography, 8k, full body shot, wide shot
And this is the result:
The prompt in this case is really long and complex, with many details. This is how we can learn from others to improve our results with MidJourney.
How to Start With MidJourney And How Much Does it Cost?
Unfortunately, MidJourney is not free but not too expensive either. The good news is that it will allow trial use for up to 25 images generated. The basic paid plan for around 200 images is $10/month or something cheaper if paid yearly. It is still a good price in my opinion.
To start with MidJourney you will need a Discord account. It is a free community chat system. The MidJourney bot works and replies to your prompts in Discord chat.
After creating a Discord account and logging in, you can visit the MidJourney home page and click Sign up. Approve and authorize the connection so that you can see MidJourney’s chat room in your left Discord panel.
This is the Discord channel of MidJourney, notice the white boats logo on the top left. We then need to enter one of the newbie’s rooms, as you can see on the left side. From here we can start sending our prompts.
To do so, we type /imagine prompt: [our prompt] ENTER
The first time you send this command, do not forget to accept the privacy terms. It will not generate anything until you do so.
After the prompt is sent, MidJourney will give us 4 preview options, as in the image above, from which we can choose. U1 to U4 is for selecting which of the images generated we like. The V1 to V4 is for providing 4 more variants based on the corresponding image we like.
After choosing our preferred image, MidJourney will produce the full-size image.
As we can see, there is also another option to upscale even more for a larger image size.
For downloading the image, just click on it to enlarge it and then right and Save As…
Can I Use These Images Freely On My Projects?
Yes, the images are unique and there is no copyright on your own generated images. It might be a good practice to place a statement that the images are AI-generated, but this is not required.
One thing to know though is that the images you create are in the public domain. They will appear in the community feed.
To produce totally private artwork, you must subscribe to the top-tier paid plan on MidJourney.
